Altiplano

 

 

A high plateau in the Andean region. Those who live there are among the poorest. Their homes and villages generally lack basic sanitation, water, and electricity.

 

 

Amigos Central

 

 

The third of the three largest Bolivian Yearly Meetings.

 

 

Aymara

              One of the 2 largest indigenous ethnicities in the Andes, believed to be descendants of the Tiwanaku culture, a highly advanced civilization that predated the Incas by several centuries.
 

BQE-Bo

 

 

Bolivian Quaker Education-Bolivia, the acronym used by the BQEF program in Bolivia. The BQE-Bo office is located in La Paz.

 

 

INELA

 

 

Iglesia Nacional Evangélica de los Amigos, centered on Calle Max Paredes at the intersection of Calle Santa Cruz. INELA is the second largest of the Bolivian yearly meetings, founded in 1924 with the support of Oregon Yearly Meeting (now Northwest Yearly Meeting).

 

 

Internado

 

 

a supervised residence for students. The Internado in Sorata provides secondary students (grades 6-12) from outlying villages with a home-like residence to sleep, eat, and study Sunday evening through Friday afternoon while they take classes in the public school.

 

 

Max Paredes

 

 

Primarily the name of a street in La Paz on which are located the offices, main church, and largest school of INELA. Often used to refer to the school.

 

 

Santidad

 

 

Literally "holiness," this is the short name for Iglesia Evangélica Misión Boliviana de Santidad Amigos, the largest of the Bolivian yearly meetings. Its origins go back to 1919, when the first Quaker missionaries arrived under the care of Central Yearly Meeting in Indiana.

 

 

UMSA

 

 

Universidad Mayor de San Andrés in La Paz, the principal public university in Bolivia.

 

 

UPEA

 

 

Universidad Pública de El Alto, a branch of UMSA in the indigenous suburb of El Alto.
